Event Time and Date
The Center for the Study of Early Christianity announces a Colloquium on Origen’s Homilies on the Psalms that will begin with a lecture by Professor Lorenzo Perrone of the University of Bologna on May 22nd at 6PM in the May Gallery of Mullen Library and resume Tuesday the 23rd from 10 AM to 6 PM in the Greek and Latin Library, Room 205 of McMahon Hall with presentations by five scholars working on the homilies. Five years ago Marina Molin Pradel, a librarian at the Staatsbibliothek in Munich, discovered that a beautiful but seemingly anonymous 371-page 12th-century Greek manuscript was a lost work of Origen, the third-century author who laid foundations for subsequent Christian theology and biblical interpretation.
We will have the opportunity to learn about that discovery and its importance from Lorenzo Perrone, the world’s foremost scholar of Origen and promoter of Origen scholarship, who authenticated the genuineness of the manuscript and published the definitive, 641-page scholarly edition that appeared last year.
